Amanda and Matt were in town for the weekend to do some planning for their Summer Wedding later this year. We met on a cold and windy day along Lake Michigan in Petoskey and quickly made our way to downtown Petoskey to capture some Engagement Photography. Amanda and Matt are naturally photogenic, contrary to their beliefs. They are a beautiful couple and you can feel their love for each other. We made quick work of the session since the wind was blowing so hard and non of us were dressed for the weather. In the 30 minutes of shooting we made our way around downtown Petoskey and captured a beautiful selection of images, mostly out of the wind.:-)

Summer 2010 Wedding Photography Season

The 2010 Wedding Season is starting soon. I have been on winter break growing my business, taking care of our new baby girl, doing some fishing and traveling, playing with the dogs, and enjoying the seasons changing in Northern Michigan.

The ferries are starting to run to Mackinac Island and all of the glum colors are beginning to change into Spring. Excited to have a few Weddings booked on Mackinac Island this year. I love working on Mackinac Island part time so that it doesn’t get old or lose its appeal to me. I still feel refreshed when I get out on Mackinac Island (some spell it Mackinaw Island but it is really Mackinac).

I have read a few blogs that are saying that morel mushrooms are being found in Ohio and Southern Michigan already. Everything is a bit early this year.

Yesterday we hit a record 82 degrees up here. I heard reports of almost 90 degrees in the Midwest! The crazy thing was that it was like 80 in Key West, Florida. Our family took a beautiful hike on the North Country Trail west of Rudyard, Michigan. The trail was dry and it was fabulous. The North Country Trail is coming together and it will be the longest trail in the USA when completed. It will go from like New York to North Dakota. How cool is that for a Northern trail!

This year my schedule is just perfect, not too many Weddings that I am gone every weekend, and enough to grow my business for the 8th year in a row! I am grateful to all of my past clients for being a wonderful referral system for me. I really appreciate everytime you mention Paul Retherford Wedding Photography.

Baby Photography | Julia is one month old today

Baby Photography in Northern Michigan

My goal is to capture images of my baby daughter everyday and so far I am succeeding. I plan on making a beautiful image book after year one to give to my daughter when she is old enough to comprehend. This project may morph into a publishable book that I can market to the masses. I am also creating a journal that I update regularly to let Julia know what is going on with her life and ours while she is growing. This first month has seen a ton of changes in her appearance and personality. Week four has seen the largest changes and Julia has been a trooper with everything that has been going on in Megan’s life. Megan is doing great and still breastfeeding after a surgery at week 3.5. Life is good!

Announcing the arrival of our Baby Girl Julia

Our first beautiful daughter Julia Currell Retherford

Our family is elated to welcome our first baby Julia Currell Retherford into the World. I have been busy being a dad and that is why there have been minimal updates on the blog. Expect to see LOTS of this girl since I am capturing images of her daily. Already have a few thousand images of her and there will be lots more.

Julia was born February 26, 2010 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan at 5:17am and weighed 6.5 pounds and 19 inches long. She came two weeks prior to my wives due date but is full term and healthy. I would like to thank Dr. Cockfield for your expert hand in delivery and all of the team of doctors at Northern Michigan Hospital. We saw all of you along the way and each of you added a bit of useful knowledge. You all do amazing work! We would also like to thank the team of nurses, lactation counselors, kitchen staff, janitors, and everyone else that I missed. We really felt at home during our stay and you all did a fantastic job. Keep up the good work and healthy babies!

The whole family is getting used to the new addition. We had the dogs kenneled during the birth and after for a few days. We dropped clothes off to them so they could smell their new sister. When they came home Sampson, our Blue Weimaraner, was very interested in Julia and Asta, our Vizsla, kind of avoided her. They both are getting used to the new sounds and smells in the household. As for Megan and me, we couldn’t be happier right now. Life and new life are precious!

New love is in the air at the Retherfords.

Julia is doing so well and she just had her 2 week appointment. We are so happy to have her in our lives and look forward to raising her to be an exceptional citizen in society. She has been really easy to care for up to this point and we are crossing our fingers that it stays that way.:-) Check out the first seven days image slideshow that I put together below.

A whole new World ~ the birth of Baby Julia Currell Retherford

The birth of our baby daughter Julia

Our baby was due on March 15, 2010. We had a baby appointment on Wednesday and we didn’t have any idea what was coming the next morning.

I awoke with Megan at 6:30 am and started my day as normal. Sitting on the couch putting together a packing plan for the baby birth at 7:30am Megan called for me to come upstairs. She says, “I think my water just broke.” If you could have seen the blank stare on my face, not to mention all the things that ran through my head in less than one second. I switched into high-speed packing mode. Megan called the hospital which was 1 hour 20 minutes away.

Not only did I not have my stuff packed but I needed to pack for the dogs too. Megan had her stuff almost ready and the baby things were ready too. By 8:00 am the car was warm, packed, and ready to roll. We were on the road to the kennel calling Carla to be prepared for the crazy doggies. A quick drop off and back on the road to Petoskey ~ Northern Michigan Hospital Emergency.

When we first arrived they had Megan in a wheelchair, she was laughing and nurses were commenting that she must not be too far in labor. In fact, she didn’t start active labor until almost 6pm. It would be a LONG day and night with the baby being born at 5:17 am on February 26, 2010. Julia was 6.5 pounds and 19 inches long. She is beautiful, healthy, and our first adorable child.

Megan is doing great recovering. It looks like we will be heading home today, about 36 hours after the birth.

Wedding Images before and after Wedding day

Do you sometimes wonder how Professional Photographers get so many awesome images of a bride and groom during a Wedding day? Well, the answer is typically in the fact that the Wedding Photographer is doing images before and after the day of the Wedding. Photographers like to call these sessions all sorts of things like bridal portrait, trash the dress, fash the dress, Pre-Wedding something, post-Wedding something…

You should consider doing a Photography Session before and/or after your Wedding day and here is why. Think about how rushed you are going to be during your Wedding day. Even if you plan hours of Wedding Photography things will typically happen and you will have less time than you thought. Planning a ton of images on your Wedding day puts everyone in a reserved mood. You want to make it easy for you, your family, and guests. This is a celebration, not a photo shoot!

There are many places that you can imagine around your Wedding location that are just rad. Why not take advantage of the areas before or after your Wedding day. Before your Wedding you need to be very careful of your dress but after the day you can be a bit more daring. You don’t have to “trash the dress” but how about “fash the dress” where you go out and just get some fabulous images in your Wedding Dress that you could never have taken the day of your Wedding. I have done lots of “Fash the Dress” sessions and some “Trash the Dress” sessions. The results are extraordinary!

My Wedding do not include many of these pre and post-Wedding sessions. I wish that every Wedding would have these because the images are fabulous! My brides and grooms typically will use these images in an album or make a separate album of these images. The sessions are fun, no stress, and you can really add your own personal style and touch. Most of the images that you see in magazines were not captured on the Wedding Day.

Trash the Dress, Fash the Dress, Pre/Post Session, Bridal Sessions

Whatever you call them just do it and you will be so happy when you look back at what you can achieve from a short fabulous session. You just may see your images gracing the cover of a bridal magazine in your area.

Need a Wedding Photographer ~ where do I start?

Some helpful Wedding Photography Information

So, you are getting married and everyone tells you that you need to book a Wedding Photographer. You have been in Weddings and have seen many Wedding Photographers and think you know who you want to book, or do you? Wedding Photography should not be taken lightly. In fact, and I could be a bit biased on this statement, BUT you should book who you want, no matter what their price.

Lots of future brides are totally overwhelmed by the amount and variety of Wedding Photographers in their area. For any given metropolis there could be a thousand or more “Wedding Photographers.” Let me dispel a few myths and a bunch of facts when it comes to Wedding Photography and possibly your future Wedding Photographer.

Let me start by telling you that I have completed over 300 Weddings with 100% satisfied clientele. I have been capturing Weddings for 7 years full-time and over 15 part-time. I have captured many destination Weddings, Church Weddings, boat Weddings, Beach Weddings, Island Weddings, and many, many in between. My first Wedding was 15 years ago, captured on film, on my Canon gear. Before Weddings I was a Yearbook photographer and Nature Photographer, showing in galleries and selling a bit of stock photography. Canon has been my gear of choice since my first Canon camera at the age of ten. That would be 25 years ago. I love my age by the way. I have seen my share of photography and I now make Wedding Photography my full-time career.

With that all said, I want to help clear up the mysterious area of Wedding Photography at your Wedding. All of what I say is my opinion using factual evidence that I have observed through my years of photography.

There are a lot of different styles of Wedding Photography out there today. Some people think that it is easy to break into Wedding Photography by buying a camera and doing cheap Wedding Photography. Beware of Wedding Photographers who shoot less than ten Weddings per year. This is like asking you to work two months out of the year at whatever you do. I wouldn’t expect you to be on the top of your game. I must say that back when I started I wasn’t cheap and I started out by showing the clients emotional and personality-filled images. This is my style. I charged what I was worth at the time, and now that I have lots of years under my belt, and I continue to get better at my career, I deserve to get a higher wage.

Some Wedding Photographers may shoot traditional styles with lots of posed images and they may even tell you how to smile or not to smile. Other Wedding Photographers will be totally quiet and not speak with you at all to get more of a photojournalistic approach. Then you will have Wedding Photographers who say they will shoot ever style from every angle and you will get everything under the sun. You have to decide what is best for your Wedding.

Regarding Wedding Photography style, remember that images that you see in a catalog or online are most likely images that the Wedding Photographer thinks define their style. If they are not what you want on your Wedding day then look elsewhere. If you want posed images that are very traditional then do not book a Wedding Photojournalist. If you want fun and creative non posed images then you may want to book a Wedding Photojournalism. Be frank with you Wedding Photographer and let them know what you want on your Wedding day. If you are not honest with them then they just assume that they are getting what you want on your day. Most Wedding Photographers do love to hear your input, if they don’t, be careful.

One of the most important things to remember is to make sure the Wedding Photographer is working for you and not the other way around. The Wedding Photographer would not be at your event if you did not hire them and they need to know and respect this fact. It is your Wedding and you are ultimately in charge. You should not be controlled by the Wedding Photographer, although a bit of direction is great to have from your Wedding Photographer during all the stress of the day. The reason that I mention this point is that I hear all the time about this or that Wedding Photographers ego and how brides feel like they are going on a photo shoot on their Wedding day for the Wedding Photographer. Just feel out the Wedding Photographer and ask lots of questions. Direction is good but a Wedding Photographer telling you how you should run your day is not.

Credentials say a lot about a Wedding Photographer but do not take them too serious. Let me put it this way, any Wedding Photographer out there could study and receive a credential, and that is respectable, but what this actually does to make that credentialed photographer better is mysterious. I have a degree and I believe that this is like a credential, anyone with the right goals can get one. The credential does not show seniority or the ability to perform in a stress filled environment like a Wedding day. A lot of Wedding Photographers really push this as an upper hand on the competition and really all you are looking at is a certificate. Again, I respect all Wedding Photographers who go through with credentials but brides and grooms know that any Wedding Photographer with a reason to aspire to have a credential could by studying and attending seminars and workshops.

Kind of on the same page, age should not be a determination of your Wedding Photographer. I have seen awesome young photographers and great older photographers. Older Wedding Photographers do not necessarily have more experience. Younger photographers are not necessarily more cutting edge. Do not rule out a Wedding Photographer due to age, whether that be young or old.

Some Wedding Photographers work out of a studio and others work out of their home. A lot of the Studio Photographers will also do all sorts of other photography like seniors, families, babies, and such. Make sure that your Wedding Photographer is thinking only about your Wedding day. If they are busy during the week filling all sorts of requests for other photography then how serious are they going to take your Wedding day? Another thing to consider is whether the Wedding Photographer has associates and if they are shooting on the same day too. This can also cause a disturbance to your day. Just make sure that 100% of the attention is on you, you deserve it! The bottom line, it doesn’t matter if the Wedding Photographer works out of a studio or home.

Keep in mind that Wedding Photographers want you to come to their studio so that they can sell you on their product. Remember to check your emotions at the door and think reasonably. I cannot tell you how many seminars I have been to that talk about how much easier it is to upsell in the studio environment if done correctly. Just think rationally and ask for time alone to talk personally with your partner without the influence of the Wedding Photographer. Don’t get hooked by impulse, use your best judgement to make sure this is the Wedding Photographer that matches your interests.

Having a Wedding Photographer assistant is a personal preference. A lot of Wedding Photographers use an assistant so that they don’t have to work as hard. If you are paying for an assistant just make sure that both Wedding Photographers are working. Keep in mind that a lot of Wedding Photographers hire high school or college students that have no where near the expertise of a professional. In the end, most Wedding Photographers only use a select few of the assistants images. I have found that having too many people photographing during the day does not let the subjects relax. Just think if you had a camera in your face all day long would you be able to be yourself? Maybe you could and then book as many photographers as possible. I personally believe that one good Wedding Photographer is much better than two or three mediocre photographers. Don’t get sold by a Wedding Photographer saying that they have lots of assistants, it just, usually means, that they are going to shoot less, not what you want on your day. To make a point about this, I was shooting a Wedding in Detroit and one of the higher end photographers was shooting next to me in the reception hall. He watched me shoot a bunch of my bride and groom images, and when asked, he said his assistant was in catching the reception images. No way, that does not work for me. I personally am from the work my butt of school and give my clients everything that I have on their day. Don’t expect less.

A lot of Wedding Photographers work as husband and wife teams. There are obvious positives and negatives to this situation too. You have to make sure that you can relate to both people and that they are there to work for you. Again, be careful and ask a lot of questions to feel out your Wedding Photographer. You should not be embarrassed to really challenge the Wedding Photographer with your questions. This is a job that you are filling after their interview.

The best way to see how a Wedding Photographer captures a day is to see an entire Wedding after edits and to see the same Wedding album. If you can speak with the client then you have the dream situation. You can find out totally about how the Wedding Photographer works and see the images. I see Wedding Photographers show case 10-20 images all the time of a Wedding. Does this really define a whole Wedding day? I can’t think that a hundred images define a Wedding day. My goal is to have a thousand images that are telling a story of a Wedding day. I know a lot of Wedding Photographers who only shoot 300 images on a particular day. I don’t think that you can tell a total story with this few images and document all the emotions, personality, and flair from the day. Lots of old timers laugh at the amount of images that some Wedding Photographers capture on a day and talk about the editing time. Well, I would rather have the images in the first place than look back at a wasted day of photography. You may never use 50 images but if you don’t get them then you never know the opportunities that could have been. It is best to be able to relate with the Wedding Photographer and be able to call him/her your friend.

Find out when you will receive the contents of your Wedding products. Some Wedding Photographers take a year or more to get the products to you. Wedding Photography Workshop in Michigan

Back2Back Photography Workshop was a two day instructional workshop for photographers of all types. Most of the attendees were Wedding Photographers in Michigan. Jason Aten Photography and Jackie Palmer from Canfield Jenkins House of Photography hosted the workshop.

The first day covered budgets, contracts, branding, websites, goals, and much more. The second day covered telling a story through albums, lighting, and live shoots.

The combination of the two days really brought together a large part of the photography industry whether you are a Wedding or a Portrait photographer.

I attended the photography workshop hoping to grasp a few new concepts and ideas and I came away with a bunch of refreshing ideas. It was well worth the money and time spent. The models from the second day photography shoot were two of Jason Aten’s clients Jason and Abbie.

Mackinac Island Trash the Dress Session

On my Birthday, Saturday, I traveled to Mackinac Island for a Trash the Dress, Anniversary Session, with Kelli and Nate. They traveled up from down state for a weekend away on the island. I am so glad that they booked a session with me, you will see why shortly.

We scheduled the session for 10am so that we could catch some morning light and also I could make it to Traverse City for my B-day. Worked out perfect for both of us. In fact, Kelli and Nate took the same time ferry over to the island as me, and she was getting into her dress at the hotel when I arrived.

Mackinac Island Carriage Ride ~ Tour

Kelli and Nate hired a Carriage Ride on Mackinac Island with Mackinac Island Carriage Tours. The driver was Tabby and she was very nice and accommodating. This is a nice way to see the island and get fabulous images all over the place.

Kelli and Nate are a beautiful couple and they photograph very well. Kelli wore her Wedding dress and Nate wore casual attire. It was a cold, just ask Kelli’s teeth, but we used some warm blankets and adrenaline to keep with the fabulous images. Of course the sun came out as I was stepping on the ferry.

This was my last Photography Session of the year and I spent some extra time to make sure I went out with fabulous, fabulous images! I think that I succeeded, what do you think?
