I wanted to tell you how absolutely amazing all of the slideshow, images, and videos are that you created!  We never had any doubt in your creative abiilities but you have far exceeded our expectations!  On Sunday after the wedding we went to an airport suite to try and get a couple hours sleep before leaving for our honeymoon and then it all started… you posted the first of the images from our wedding!  AAAAAHHHHHH!!!  It was so exciting to see the first pictures and they were so awesome!!!  And then you posted more, and more, and more!  Needless to say we didnt get much sleep but it was so exciting!!!  And while we were on vacation you posted more for us to see.  Waiting for more images to be posted and reading the comments was so much fun!  And the final video is amazing, a tear jerker for sure!

Returning home to the proofs and the cool little keepsake album was a pleasant surprise!  We spent several hours looking at them.  And the next day the memory stick came!  Even better!  You run a first class operation Mr. Paul Retherford!”

The robins were out in the lawn eating worms, the cranes and canada geese were flying through, and the weather was starting to get warm.  Then this came.  I captured the nice texture on my garage roof from my diamond shingles.

The Rudyard Lions Club invited Santa to the Rudyard Community Center for free images with Santa and Mrs. Claus with all the local kids.  I was asked to come and capture images and I donated my time and instant prints for a little extra Holiday cheer.  It was a fun night and I was glad to be part of the festive occasion with all the local families.  There were about 100+ kids that took advantage of the free photography with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus.

No babies were harmed in the making of these images.;-)  Julia doesn’t cry much, and when she does she can usually be calmed down quickly which she was by her beautiful mom.

Last Week I had the opportunity to run with Coach Morse in his goal to complete a thousand miles for Michigan in 200 cities and towns.  He stopped in Rudyard, Michigan after I had met him in Mackinaw City and asked him to come run in our small town.  Coach Morse finished mile 140 in Rudyard with me running the 5 miles with him.  We had a nice chat along our run and he got a bunch of video and images too.  He is doing the run to bring some spirit back to the Michigan people and shed some light on our state and the state of our state.  This run is not political.  Coach Morse is a life coach and his website http://www.thousandmilesformichigan.com documents his travels with a video blog.  You can find him on YouTube and Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/thousandmilesformichigan too.

This past week I spent in Grand Haven, Michigan at Chinook Pier aboard my brother’s boat, Catch-A-Bunch Fishing Charters.  He runs Lake Michigan Salmon Fishing Charters out of the port city of Grand Haven, Michigan.  His boat is a 31 foot Tiara Yacht.  Catch-A-Bunch is sponsored by numerous Professional fishing companies and has all the latest fishing electronics, baits, and gear.

It was a wonderful week to be on the water.   I ran some Charter Fishing trips and first mated on others.   The weather was perfect and the fishing was good too.  We averaged around 8 fish per trip.  We caught a 16.5 pound Chinook salmon and a 15.5 pound Lake Trout in different trips.

If I lived closer to Grand Haven, Michigan I would fish more often with Catch-A-Bunch and mate on Chinook Pier.  A fishing week in mid Summer really does restore the soul.:-)

A Thomas Fogarty Winery Wedding took my family out to California where we stayed at The Beach House in Half Moon Bay, California.  The location is beautiful and I highly recommend this location.

We were offered an ocean front room at The Beach House since they were doing some painting and repairs on the exterior of the building.

The rooms/suites are really nicely decorated and they are very comfortable.  There was plenty of room for my wife, baby daughter and me.  There is a King bed in all of the rooms and a sleeper sofa.  They also have a working fireplace, fridge, microwave, stove top, sink, and a nice bathroom with separate shower and bathtub with double sinks.   The art was all from local artists and very unique.

The staff at the Beach House is very accommodating.  Continental Breakfast is more of deluxe breakfast with fresh fruit, juice, coffee, homemade breads, rolls, bagels, and lots more.  I loved their breakfasts and my wife was cutting out dairy and wheat for the baby and she found plenty to eat too!

The pool and hot tub are well kept and very comfortable even in the 70 degree weather.  It is nice to sit and look out at the Pacific Ocean.

You can watch surfers riding the waves from your deck if you have an oceanside room too.

Even though The Beach House does not offer Weddings you can go next door to the Oceana Resort and Spa to have your Wedding ceremony and  Wedding reception.

The Beach House is located right next to Sam’s Chowder House and close to the Oceana, within short walking distance, which is a beautiful Wedding location.  If I was getting married at Oceana Resort and Spa I would consider staying at The Beach House.   The location is definitely better at The Beach House and the rooms are fantastic too.

My goal is to capture images of my baby daughter everyday and so far I am succeeding.  I plan on making a beautiful image book after year one to give to my daughter when she is old enough to comprehend.  This project may morph into a publishable book that I can market to the masses.  I am also creating a journal that I update regularly to let Julia know what is going on with her life and ours while she is growing.    This first month has seen a ton of changes in her appearance and personality.  Week four has seen the largest changes and Julia has been a trooper with everything that has been going on in Megan’s life.  Megan is doing great and still breastfeeding after a surgery at week 3.5.  Life is good!

Our family is elated to welcome our first baby Julia Currell Retherford into the World.  I have been busy being a dad and that is why there have been minimal updates on the blog.  Expect to see LOTS of this girl since I am capturing images of her daily.  Already have a few thousand images of her and there will be lots more.

Julia was born February 26, 2010 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan at 5:17am and weighed 6.5 pounds and 19 inches long.  She came two weeks prior to my wives due date but is full term and healthy.  I would like to thank Dr. Cockfield for your expert hand in delivery and all of the team of doctors at Northern Michigan Hospital.  We saw all of you along the way and each of you added a bit of useful knowledge.  You all do amazing work!  We would also like to thank the team of nurses, lactation counselors, kitchen staff, janitors, and everyone else that I missed.  We really felt at home during our stay and you all did a fantastic job.  Keep up the good work and healthy babies!

The whole family is getting used to the new addition.  We had the dogs kenneled during the birth and after for a few days.  We dropped clothes off to them so they could smell their new sister.  When they came home Sampson, our Blue Weimaraner, was very interested in Julia and Asta, our Vizsla, kind of avoided her.  They both are getting used to the new sounds and smells in the household.  As for Megan and me, we couldn’t be happier right now.  Life and new life are precious!

New love is in the air at the Retherfords.

Julia is doing so well and she just had her 2 week appointment.  We are so happy to have her in our lives and look forward to raising her to be an exceptional citizen in society.  She has been really easy to care for up to this point and we are crossing our fingers that it stays that way.:-)  Check out the first seven days image slideshow that I put together below.

Our baby was due on March 15, 2010.  We had a baby appointment on Wednesday and we didn’t have any idea what was coming the next morning.

I awoke with Megan at 6:30 am and started my day as normal.  Sitting on the couch putting together a packing plan for the baby birth at 7:30am Megan called for me to come upstairs.  She says, “I think my water just broke.”  If you could have seen the blank stare on my face, not to mention all the things that ran through my head in less than one second.  I switched into high-speed packing mode.  Megan called the hospital which was 1 hour 20 minutes away.

Not only did I not have my stuff packed but I needed to pack for the dogs too.  Megan had her stuff almost ready and the baby things were ready too.  By 8:00 am the car was warm, packed, and ready to roll.  We were on the road to the kennel calling Carla to be prepared for the crazy doggies.  A quick drop off and back on the road to Petoskey ~ Northern Michigan Hospital Emergency.

When we first arrived they had Megan in a wheelchair, she was laughing and nurses were commenting that she must not be too far in labor.  In fact, she didn’t start active labor until almost 6pm.  It would be a LONG day and night with the baby being born at 5:17 am on February 26, 2010.  Julia was 6.5 pounds and 19 inches long.  She is beautiful, healthy, and our first adorable child.

Megan is doing great recovering.  It looks like we will be heading home today, about 36 hours after the birth.

How are you getting from your Wedding Ceremony to your Wedding Reception?  Maybe it is in the same location so you can walk or ride a bike.  What if you want to go off-site and do some fun images along the water, architecture, overlook, nature, etc.  At some point you need to consider Wedding Transportation and also who will be with you on this Wedding ride.

There are a lot of options out there for you to consider.  Limousine(limo), bus, limo bus, antique car, semi, trolley, wagon, sleigh, sled, snowmobile, atv, buggy, helicopter, sailboat, pontoon, sport car, convertible, horse, boat, your own car, bike, carriage, scooter, someone’s shoulders or back, or the old fashioned way, walk.  Check out some of the options that I, Paul Retherford Wedding Photography, have photographed.

Getting some ideas for your Wedding transportation plans?

This last photo the bride was delivered to the ceremony on the pontoon with an umbrella over her to hide her from her guest.  They decorated the dock and the path up to the gazebo for the Wedding isle.  Dad met the bride at the dock and walked her all the way up to the gazebo where their were chairs on both sides, a acoustic singer, and lots of beautiful flowers and details.  Following the ceremony the Wedding party jumped back on the pontoon, the sign was displayed and they took a tour around the lake.  I rode on a separate pontoon and captured lots of fabulous images.

Just last month the bride and groom hired a bus to take the Wedding party from Monroe to Ann Arbor for the Wedding Reception.  The bride and groom met a horse drawn carriage downtown Ann Arbor and did a Wedding ride through beautiful Ann Arbor by the University of Michigan campus.  I ran next to the carriage and captured images for about a mile.  It was really cold but really worth the images.

Some Wedding ceremonies are a stone throw to the Wedding reception.  Sometimes the bride and groom elect to do something fun like take off on a tandem bike for a few images following the ceremony.  I have had brides and grooms that ride in on a bike when they are introduced.  The sky is really the limit.

You know that your time in the Wedding Transportation is typically going to be short so keep that in mind when booking your Wedding Ride.  Make a list of everyone that you want to include.  Sometimes brides and grooms like to include spouses and partners on the ride.  It is your day and you will have the images after the day to remember it all.  Think about they dynamics of having these people on the ride with you.  Will it add to your day or make the people more reserved.

Lastly, feel free to really put your personal stamp of uniqueness on anything you do.  I always enjoy the people who go the extra mile to jazz up their Wedding Transportation to really make their images all the more spectacular.  On the other hand, if you have Wedding Transportation that is unique then you made need just the beauty of the bride and groom on the ride.

Do you sometimes wonder how Professional Photographers get so many awesome images of a bride and groom during a Wedding day?  Well, the answer is typically in the fact that the Wedding Photographer is doing images before and after the day of the Wedding.  Photographers like to call these sessions all sorts of things like bridal portrait, trash the dress, fash the dress, Pre-Wedding something, post-Wedding something…

You should consider doing a Photography Session before and/or after your Wedding day and here is why.  Think about how rushed you are going to be during your Wedding day.  Even if you plan hours of Wedding Photography things will typically happen and you will have less time than you thought.  Planning a ton of images on your Wedding day puts everyone in a reserved mood.  You want to make it easy for you, your family, and guests.  This is a celebration, not a photo shoot!

There are many places that you can imagine around your Wedding location that are just rad.  Why not take advantage of the areas before or after your Wedding day.  Before your Wedding you need to be very careful of your dress but after the day you can be a bit more daring.  You don’t have to “trash the dress” but how about “fash the dress” where you go out and just get some fabulous images in your Wedding Dress that you could never have taken the day of your Wedding.  I have done lots of “Fash the Dress” sessions and some “Trash the Dress” sessions.  The results are extraordinary!

My Wedding do not include many of these pre and post-Wedding sessions.  I wish that every Wedding would have these because the images are fabulous!  My brides and grooms typically will use these images in an album or make a separate album of these images.  The sessions are fun, no stress, and you can really add your own personal style and touch.  Most of the images that you see in magazines were not captured on the Wedding Day.

Trash the Dress, Fash the Dress, Pre/Post Session, Bridal Sessions

Whatever you call them just do it and you will be so happy when you look back at what you can achieve from a short fabulous session.  You just may see your images gracing the cover of a bridal magazine in your area.

Yesterday I took my blue Weimaraner and Vizsla for a run on a seasonal road.  There was a few inches of soft snow on top so I decided not to wear my snowshoes.  It was a tough walk in but not too bad.  The dogs were having fun running down the road and exploring into the woods a small amount.  They live for this!

I was capturing some images of them in their crazy fun mode and then I heard Asta, the Vizsla, barking.  Not a good sign.   She typically won’t bark unless she is alerting Sampson to something or wants to play.  I ran as fast as I could the 100 or so yards up to find Sampson digging and pawing at something under an uprooted tree.  I called him and he would’t come.  Then he looked and his face was covered with quills.

We were a good mile or more from the car and I knew that he would let me start pulling the quills so I turned and ran, and ran, and ran.  All the time calling to Sampson to get to the car and load up.  He would stop and pull quills out along the way.  I am sure he was in pain but never whined or anything.  He just tried to get them out of his mouth, nose, and lips.

We arrived at the car and I got Asta la Vizsla in the car and she immediately went to the front car floor and wouldn’t look at Sampson.  Sam jumped in the back seat and I took off fast.  I called the vet and I was about 20 minutes away  they said.  I really wasn’t sure how many quills he had in his throat so I was a bit worried.

On the way I was able to take a few images.  These are a bit graphic so be prepared, no blood.

The Sault Animal Hospital took good care of Sampson and they were able to get some of his shots done too and clip his nails all while he was taking a time out.  It took about 1.5 hours to get Sampson through the extractions.

He is doing great today and finding time to relax.  He doesn’t seem like he has any swelling or soreness in the face.  In fact, he is playing with his toys inside and out.

Lesson, hopefully, learned by the 6.5 year old guy.  This was his first encounter.

Couples have a hard time deciding if they should have a Dollar Dance at their Wedding.  Some Wedding couples like to do a ‘dash for cash” or a “first dance auction” or a “kiss matching donation.”

Personally, I do not voice my opinion in this matter.  I do have my own opinions on the matter but I am at the Wedding to capture the day and not disrupt the flow.  The extra dances allow for more creative images for me to capture during the night that may never happen.  In a way it is almost image staging with some of your guests.

The Dollar Dance is a dance that any guest can dance with the bride and/or groom for at least one dollar.  Usually the best man and maid of honor collect the money donated by the guests and give the money to the bride and groom for their honeymoon following the finish of the dancing.  Typically it is at least two full songs and many times lots more depending on the activity.   Sometimes the bride and groom have a competition and there is a wager or bet attached to the money earned.  For example, one couple had a competition and if the groom lost he had to do dishes for 1 month after the Wedding and if the bride lost she had to wash the grooms car each week for a month.  Sometimes the bride and groom can add a bit of their flair or personality to this dance with a bit of creativity.

“Dash for Cash” is just how it sounds.  Usually the bride and groom have some form of wager on the amount of money earned.  They have a hat or something for guest to input money.  The DJ will announce the event and hype it up and then there is a set amount of time the bride and groom have to colllect as much money as they can throughout the reception.   All money is given to bride and groom for honeymoon.

“First Dance Auction” is an auction that the DJ announces and guests bid on a first dance with the bride and groom.  Sometimes this is the only dance the bride and groom do with guests and people can really get into this.  The funds are given to the bride and groom.

“Kiss matching donation” is another way of creating funds and I learned this from one particular DJ down in Southwest Michigan.  I was amazed that this DJ collected $750 for the bride and groom during the evening!  This is how it works.  The DJ announces that anyone can come up to the DJ station and put in a donation to the bride and groom and then suggest a couple, table, friends, or whomever to kiss.  The DJ will announce that he has a donation for X and they people can either kiss, match the donation and not kiss, or increase the donation and make someone else or the original donater kiss.  I have seen this go in circles for some time before someone kissed and the game was over until the next donation.

Some DJs want to work this into your Wedding Receptions and others try to move away from the idea.  I have heard reasons for having and not having any of these events.  I have also seen DJs who take a portion of the money earned, usually a percentage for their time and efforts in getting the crowd in the mood to donate.  This does take extra effort but isn’t that why the DJ is at the reception?

Either way you will have a beautiful Wedding Reception and guests are happy to just be there and see you in your fabulous Wedding gown and the groom looking like a stud.  Most people are honored to be a part of your day and know that it is your day and you have it how you want it.

Kuyper College Vos Chapel | St. George Center

Saturday could not have been a more beautiful day to have a winter Wedding in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Dawn and Nate had a beautiful day planned for about 150 of their closest family and friends.  With blue skies and temps in the 20s, we were able to get beautiful outdoor images and the snow decorated the trees like a winter wonderland.

Thank you to Deb and Dave for having me as the Wedding Photographer.  I was honored to be part of Dawn and Nate’s Wedding day!

Kuyper College Vos Chapel Wedding in Grand Rapids, Michigan

The ladies were at the Panopoulos Salon in Grand Rapids, Michigan early getting their hair done.  The day began around noon for me with getting ready images, details, flowers, and locations images.  The bride and groom took time to have lunch and relax before getting into their dress and tuxedo.  The bride and groom were not interested in getting ready images so I spent time focusing on family and friends who were a part of the day while they prepared.

Vos Chapel is a wonderful location for a Wedding.  The decorations are always beautiful and a few flowers makes this place perfect.  There is a lot of light in the location and it can hold up to 200 people. The gentle slope in the Chapel makes for eye level images from the rear of the Wedding Chapel.

The Wedding Colors were hunter green with accents of orange and silver.  The Wedding theme was a Winter Wedding theme.  The orange flowers were very well done by Shelly’s Designs.  Shelly was really easy to work with during the day and her flowers were gorgeous!  Here is Shelly’s contact information:

The Wedding Ceremony was beautiful.  A friend of the couple did the Wedding videography. The Bride’s Grandfather was the officiant and he was a hoot.  He made some jokes and had a great time marrying the couple.  I was told that he was 86 which is probably one of the oldest officiant that I have worked along side.

Grand Rapids Theological Seminary | Grand Rapids, Michigan Blue Bridge

On the way to the Wedding Ceremony at St. George Banquet and Conference Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan we made quick stops at the Puritan Theological Seminary on Leonard Street and the Blue Bridge in Downtown Grand Rapids, MI for some Wedding party images in the Winter weather.  Even having a mild Winter day was still bitter cold when not moving.  I kept the Wedding party in motion and make quick images to guard against cold face images.  The blue bridge still had the large picnic table on top of it from the Art Prize show.  It was a unique touch.

St. George Banquet and Conference Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan Wedding Reception

St. George Banquet and Conference Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan is a very classy location to have a Wedding Reception.  The hall has beautiful pillars and lighting and is very well kept.  It will accommodate a large group and there is a kitchen on site too.  Have your Wedding, Event, or Corporate Meetings there.  The staff was friendly and the food service is wonderful too.  I would recommend this site to anyone.

On New Years I traveled down to Southeast Michigan in preparation for Jennifer and Richard’s January 2, 2010 Wedding Ceremony in Monroe Michigan at Zion Lutheran Church with their Wedding Reception at Kensington Court in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  I could not ask for a nicer ride in the winter down I-75, sunny day and the highway was empty.

Jennifer and Richard are currently living in Arizona and they came home for the Christmas Holiday to celebrate with family and say their vows in the New Year.  Like every Wedding, this Wedding had tons of planning involved.  Jennifer and Rich really had a lot of details in their Wedding day.  They are a fabulous couple and wish them the best of luck in their endeavors.

The Wedding Reception took place at Zion Lutheran Church in Monroe, Michigan.  This Church is a beautiful setup and has plenty of room for the bride to prepare and the groom to prepare and relax.  This is my second Wedding at this church.  They have isle candles, beautiful stained glass windows, lots of room by the alter, balcony, organ, piano, and more.  If you are looking for a Wedding Ceremony location in Monroe consider Zion Lutheran Church.

Flowers by Dennis Winter ~ Winter Wedding Florist

Wedding flowers were beautiful thanks to Flower’s by Winter, Dennis Winter.  This is the second time working with Dennis and he really outdid himself again today.  There were flowers everywhere you looked, and all of them were just perfect.  He told me that he had 150 hours in to his flowers!  Now that is dedication.  If you like what you see then contact Dennis at:

I can vouch for Dennis and say that both brides were thrilled with the results.  Dennis is a retired Ford worker and he just loves what he does.  His prices are too fair and he says that he barely covers his costs, but loves what he does.

Videography by Ikonic Images with Jason Teets

This was my second time working along with Jason Teets of Ikonic Images for videography.  He has been a videographer now for five years and does a wonderful job.  I found that we work great together and he communicates well with his intentions so as not to get in each others shots.  I know that Jennifer and Rich will be pleased with their Winter Wedding videographer, Ikonic Images.  Definitely recommend Jason for your Wedding Videographer.

The Wedding Ceremony was perfect at Zion Lutheran Church.  Everything was fabulous.

After the Wedding, the bus transported the Wedding Party to Ann Arbor, Michigan where the bride and groom took a Wedding Carriage ride with Ann Arbor Carriage.  This was a nice option with wonderful opportunities for Winter Wedding and Ann Arbor architectural images.  Jason and I ran beside the Wedding carriage and in front to capture a bunch of images for probably 3/4 mile.  It was well worth it for the horse drawn carriage images, and considering it was single digits outside, we stayed warm too!  The Wedding Carriage transported the bride and groom around Ann Arbor for an architectural cruise and photography shoot.  Wonderful and unique Winter Wedding images!   If you are looking for something different around Ann Arbor then consider Ann Arbor Carriage.  They say that they are available state wide so check them out.

The Wedding Party met us at the University of Michigan Law Quad and we captured some beautiful Winter Wedding images out of the wind, but still in the cold.  Everyone was a bit under dressed for the occasion but we managed to have some fun and capture some fabulous images.

The cold did not hold us back.  As you can see the ladies adapted to the winter fun with their styling undergarments.:-)

Last, but not least, the Wedding Reception in Ann Arbor at the Kensington Court just off of I-94.  The location is perfect for locating and Kensington Court is beautiful.   The staff is very friendly and they accommodated all requests.  You didn’t have to wait in line for anything which was really nice and efficient.  The Winter/Christmas theme was fantastic and the pianist that Jennifer booked just brought the atmosphere together with warmth and love.  The guests really seemed to be having a wonderful time and most of them stayed until after 10pm.  This is rare for most Weddings.  I had the fortune of a full dance floor for the entire night thanks to Surround Sound Entertainment and DJ Brian Regnier.

Everything at the Kensington Court was perfect.  The flowers were awesome, DJ, Service, Food, Video, and most of all, the atmosphere.

Everyone danced the night away.  I stayed until the bitter end to get all of the excitement and really document the Wedding day.  My day was almost 14 hours of Wedding Photography and 16 hours in total with travel.  It was well worth the time for the beautiful Winter Wedding images that I captured for Jennifer and Rich!  Let’s keep this party going!
